Melbourne Cup Favourites 2022

When thinking about placing bets on your Melbourne Cup predictions, be aware that the odds will change. Betting tips will be plentiful nearer to the races, and finding the Melbourne Cup winner will be the hardest task of all. As of right now, though, these three horses have the shortest odds to be the Melbourne Cup winner this year:

Melbourne Cup Predictions

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained this brilliant young colt. Hitotsu has already won the Victoria Derby, Australian Guineas and Australian Derby. Can he be the Melbourne Cup winner this time too?

We already know he likes Flemington, and he looks sure to stay 3200 metres. He is a class horse for sure. Much will depend on his prep in the spring and what barrier he draws when we know the final field.

Incentivise was a very warm favourite among the Melbourne Cup predictions last year. In finishing second to the brilliant Verry Elleegant, he was injured in the race, and we haven’t seen him since.

His participation is in doubt now, but he remains prominent in the Melbourne Cup betting. If he recovers and gets enough horse racing leading up to November, he is still one of the key horses and the subject of many betting tips.

Verry Elleegant

The wonder mare was placed in the same category as the great Makybe Diva when she won this race last year. In truth, Verry Elleegant hasn’t been in the same form this time around. She remains a strong challenger, but to be a double Melbourne Cup winner and perhaps fight it out with Incentivise again looks unlikely.

Hitotsu and Verry Elleegant may well make it to the field, along with other strong challengers, including Stay Foolish, Duais, Spanish Mission and Manobo.

Melbourne Cup Tips

Making your Melbourne Cup predictions isn’t easy, even for pros. Finding the next Makybe Diva or Verry Elleegant is easier said than done.

You can simply follow some good betting tips after we know the field. If you want to pick out your horse racing bets before that, however, keep these things in mind:

  1. Horse Form – Not too many win this race when they’re not currently in great form. Class is hugely important in horse racing, so look out for horses that have proven they can win at the highest level.
  2. Racing Distance – A Melbourne Cup winner doesn’t have to be proven over 3200 metres. They don’t usually jump up right from 1600. They need to have either proven themselves over a minimum of 2400 metres or have stamina in their breeding, as this is a true test of a horse.
  3. Trainers – There aren’t too many fairy tale stories when it comes to lesser horse racing trainers, so keep that in mind when making your Melbourne Cup predictions. Chris Waller, Joseph O’Brien and arguably the world’s current no.1 horse racing trainer, Charlie Appleby, have all won in recent years.
  4. Betting Value – Having made your Melbourne Cup predictions, make sure you always get the best odds for your bet. Don’t place bets at odds of 7/1 when 9/1 is available with another betting site.

Betting Trends

Previous betting trends can help Melbourne Cup predictions. We’ve looked at the last 20 renewals of the Melbourne Cup for any consistent racing themes. Keep these things in mind when picking your potential Cup winner:

  • 20/20 won at 18/1 or shorter in the betting
  • 20/20 were beaten no further than seven lengths last time out
  • 20/20 were never racing over more than 3200 metres beforehand
  • 20/20 did not carry more than 119lbs
  • 20/20 had previously won a Group race
  • 19/20 were placed in Group 2 races at least
  • 19/20 carried less than 131lbs last time out
  • 19/20 had been racing within the last 52 days
  • 19/20 took part in races in either Australia or England last time out
  • 19/20 were between 3 and 6 years old

These trends do not necessarily shape Melbourne Cup betting. Therefore, they are good horse racing rules to keep in mind when making your Melbourne Cup predictions.
